Critics’ Choice Awards – By The Numbers

The Critics’ Choice Awards nominations are announced on December 14th, and there are some solid Oscar-winning correlations to be found.

Over the past ten years, almost uniformly across all corresponding categories, if you’re not nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award, you’re not winning the Oscar.

It’s been 100% true across Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Animated Feature, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume, Foreign Language Feature, Song, and VFX.

And 90% correct for Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Documentary Feature, Editing and Score.

So no Critics’ Choice nomination, no Oscar win.

For those that win their Critics’ Choice category, these are the strongest connections with an eventual Oscar win:

  • Supporting Actress, Prod Design - have matched 9/10 years

  • Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay, Animation Feature, Cine, Costume, and Song – 8/10 years.

  • Director, Actor, Score – 7/10

Winners will be announced January 15th 2023.

Hopefully the Supporting Actress markets are still unsettled at that time.
