2024 Oscars Best Picture best bet

Christopher Nolan’s latest film looks like a return to form and is a rising contender to win the Best Picture Academy Award

96th Academy Awards - Best Picture - Oppenheimer

After the lackluster Tenet, Christopher Nolan returns with Oppenheimer.

Among the top directors working today in cinema, Nolan occupies an elite group of respect and will be held in high regard by Academy Awards members this awards season.

This augurs for Academy Awards favour when nominations are announced on January 23rd 2024.

Confidence is high that Nolan's 12th feature film will land a nomination for Best Picture. Not only is the war drama destined to make the final list of ten, for five reasons it should challenge to ultimately win the prestigious Best Picture prize on Sunday, March 10:

  1. Early pre public release screenings have generated positive feedback

  2. The Academy have occasionally given the chocolates to individuals who have delivered a great body of work with little awards recognition. Nolan belongs in this camp, and is “due”

  3. At this stage, only Flowers of the Moon stands in its way, with Martin Scorsese's new film currently the odds favourite to win.

  4. Past Lives will win with a nomination but is unlikely to contend for the actual Best Picture win. The Korean American drama is overpraised, and Academy Awards voters will receive it with lukewarm pleasure once it is seen

  5. All other titles competing for the big prize are speculative and must be at least seen for a temperature gauge.

But tread carefully. Betting at this stage of the season must be stepped with caution. Much will change in what’s hot, and what’s not. As we saw last year with Everything Everywhere All at Once, curveballs will emerge. I was hot on everything but Everything at last year’s Oscars, and was burned in this category.

Nevertheless, the price at Pointsbet is too generous to ignore. My ratings have Oppenheimer a 20% or $5 to win. At $9 odds, this is a must get bet and the price will trend south when the film debuts to general public release on Thursday. While there is still value and before betting markets wake from their slumber, the Oppenheimer trigger must be pulled now

This is a low conviction play.
